Marsh Canada has been appointed as the exclusive insurance and risk management broker for the HortProtect Property and Casualty Insurance Program.

Toronto-based brokerage firm Sinclair Cockburn and Lombard was the previous broker under the HortProtect program. Marsh refers to itself as the world's leading insurance broker and risk adviser, with over 23,000 employees with clients in over 100 countries.

The announcement of the switching insurance carriers came through the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA), with the changeover effective Sept. 15.

“Sinclair Cockburn and Lombard imposed a significant coverage restriction, effective July 1, 2010, therefore removing any liability coverage for snow removal operations along with double-digit rate increases to all members,” said CNLA executive director Victor Santacruz, CAE, CLP. “This restriction was clearly unacceptable and CNLA and its insurance committee began to seek alternative solutions.” According to Santacruz, some of the specific reasons that set Marsh apart were:
  • Experience with trade associations and group programs with dedicated specialists
  • Extensive access and relationships with domestic and international insurers
  • Risk management approach to risk identification and innovative solutions to create program stability
  • Claims management and advocacy for our members
  • Ability to offer local service through 13 offices nationally and retail broker network, including current existing sub-broker relationships
  • Ability to develop collaborative solutions for participating member organizations

Presently CNLA and Marsh are negotiating with a number of insurers to provide an insurance and risk management program for association members under our HortProtect brand. “We encourage members to support this new initiative and we will provide you with tools to help you minimize your overall costs,” says CNLA’s insurance committee chair Gerald Boot, who is also past president of Landscape Ontario.

The committee requests association members take part in a survey at Survey. To contact Marsh Canada, use the toll free telephone number at 1-888-949-4360, or email cnla.hortprotect@marsh.com.

What are the next steps?

Once an inquiry is made under the HortProtect Insurance program, a representative will contact you within 30 days, depending when your current policy expires. “It should be noted that sharing your information does not obligate you in any way to participate in the CNLA HortProtect Insurance Program, and the information being collected will allow Marsh to conduct further analysis and build a product that meets your needs,” says Santacruz.
